The small farmers of the peninsula cut turf from the small blanket bogs on the mountain ridges of the peninsula, the turf was burned all winter in the fire warming the kitchen and cooking food.  Saving the turf was a major endeavour and not for the weak or watery !!  In the 1920’s the Minister for Education granted rural National Schools an extra weeks holiday for the Summer, the boys were to help with the turf cutting and saving and the thrashings.
